Wednesday I finished potting the large pots on our back deck. Last year I had three pots and decided to put herbs and flowers in them. I planted lavender, spearmint, peppermint, and basil. We loved being able to walk right out the door from the kitchen to snip fresh herbs to use in our lemonades or pastas or curries. Mmmm.
I wanted more of that this year. I wanted to move all of the herbs from one of the boxes in my vegetable garden into pots on the porch.
So we did.
And this year we have all kinds of herbs that I am SO excited about: basil, chives, cilantro, dill, lavender, leek (ok, it’s not an herb, but it’s in there with ’em), lemon balm, lemon grass, lemon verbena, marjoram, parsley, rosemary, sage, savory, spearmint, thyme, and one more that I can’t think of right now. It’s just on the left of the sage. Hmm. What is it?! (I went and looked: oregano!)
I was so excited when I finished transplanting and potting them all that I had to give a tour to a few of my children. And one of the neighbor boys that was over.
I learned to celebrate in this way from my friend’s mom. She liked to appreciate a job well done. Her desire to share her delight in a good job reminds me of when God created each phase of the world and saw that it was good (see Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31).
I’m getting excited for fresh potato salad, cucumber dill salad, tomato basil soup, mint lemonade, roasted chicken, lavender nuts, homemade mint ice cream, lemon balm tea, and whatever else we discover along our herb-enriched summer path.
P.S. You can click on the tag “cooking with herbs” in the right side bar tags menu, or search “herbs” (or the name of the herb) to find any of our family recipes that use fresh herbs. I tried to go back through to tag any of them accordingly.
P.S. I’ll take some photos later in the season when the plants are all growing and thriving and the flowers are spilling over the edges. Yeehaw!
P.S. (Last one. My awesome brother-in-law made those sweet rusted planter butterfly and hummingbird stakes. My sister orchestrated it and gave them to me. Thanks to them for helping make my deck all the lovelier!)
